I'm not whether or not critics will like this one but I suspect that fans of the genre (slice-of-life with light romance elements) may consider this one a classic in the future.Released in 2018, it's a pretty literal life-action translation of the manga and anime. The story is about a teenager who works in a diner and used to be a track star, and her relationship with her manager who aspires to be an author. Both of these characters are stuck in their aspirational careers and bury themselves in their "day job", but difference is that one is a teenager and the other is in his mid-forties.Before you gag and click away this isn't one of those tales of forbidden love and scandal (though that fear/possibility is lampshaded). This more about a precocious teen who is so odd and strangely mature for her age that everyone around her is puzzled by her actions, and everyone is trying to get her to pursue a dream that may be a lot less important to her than it is to them (or is it?), and whether or not it's too late for her manager to aspire to more than mediocrity.Their relationship (?) is more one of respectful friendship than anything else, and clearly this girl is SERIOUS about her intentions as opposed to some kid looking for a thrill or to make trouble. How that translates or applies in your own environment and culture is open to interpretation (but for the record, there's zero sexual content in this film, and I don't think there's even any innuendo or swearing that I could find).I haven't read the manga but the anime was gorgeously animated slice-of-life that seemed to somewhat derail/lose focus later on by devoting perhaps too much time to the man's aspirations and other relationships, such that I was getting irritated/bored with it for lack of progression on what to me is the main story. In that respect this film is tighter and more straightforward, as dictated by it's length. The direction is good but not Earth-shattering. If you are familiar with Train Man, Linda, Linda, Linda, or any of those other similar films that manga companies used to distribute this is going to feel familiar. The schoolgirls look a bit old for their roles but when you're used to Hollywood comedies with 30-year-olds playing teens I think creative allowance should be made. The performances are uniformly very good. Not amazing but never bad. Likewise music, pacing, cinematography are squarely in the "good" realm and this is one that's really for the fans. Watching it makes me want to read the manga or possibly re-read Train Man.If you're a fan of the anime, the manga, or similar films check it out. If you like it it's going to be more for the story than anything and it's well executed here.
